"We can't have you in here without having you go ahead and do something live for us," said Lamar's hosts.
They started off by looping James Brown's "The Payback," which came out in 1973 -- the same year as the Isley Brothers' most familiar version of "That Lady," which is sampled in "i." After that, the beat shifted several times while Kendrick delivered "straight hip-hop off the top."
Lamar sported a grin throughout the session. At one point, he rapped, "And when I rock, you feel it." It's hard to disagree.
